(CHICAGO, ILL.) Chicago Music and Dance International along with the Athenaeum Theatre present 2012 World Dance Day on Sunday, April 29, 2012 at 7 p.m. This unprecedented day of dance celebrates the 30th anniversary of International Dance Day, a world wide celebration held every April 29th and introduced in 1982 by the International Dance Committee of the UNESCO International Theatre Institute. Held at the historic Athenaeum Theatre, 2936 N. Southport Ave., Chicago, 2012 World Dance Day showcases performances by 11 of Chicago’s most exciting ethnic dance groups representing the traditional dancing of Spain, Bolivia, Mexico, Lithuania, Romania, Korea, China, Ireland, Germany, Africa and the Philippines as well as a few of Chicago’s most respected dance troupes. A special 2 p.m. performance features children dancers from the majority of the ethnic dance groups. Tickets are $15 – $35 and are available by calling 773-935-6875 or by visiting www.athenaeumtheatre.com.
“Chicago is internationally respected as a city that is passionate about the art of dance and that passion and enthusiasm for dance as an art form is shared by Mayor Emanuel, a former dancer,” said Altin Naska, co-founder and artistic director of the Chicago International Dance Forum. “Chicago has a rich cultural tapestry comprised of many different ethnic groups and it is important that these beautiful century-old traditions be preserved and shared with a broad audience. Audience members that attend this performance can literally take a trip around the world through the magic of dance.”
Dance groups scheduled to participate in 2012 World Dance Day include Ensemble Espanol (Spain), Renacer Boliviano (Bolivia), Mexican Dance Ensemble (Mexico), Laume (Lithuania), Miorita (Romania), Choomsarang (Korea) as well as the Joel Hall Dance, M.A.D.D. Rhythms and Chicago Dance performing hip-hop, tap and ballroom dance styles.
