eta Creative Arts Foundation recently opened the first of three plays around the theme “Reclaiming Community.” Straight out of today’s headlines, this trilogy of plays deals with drugs, gun violence, death, loss of cultural identity and their impact on our community. Most important is how these plays spotlight heroic individuals in our families and communities who challenge the tide of negativity engulfing our cities. These plays are about reclaiming our communities, about taking back our power.
Using the arts and theatre specifically as a tool of engagement, drama and comedy combine to create a bridge over which conversations about solutions to the challenges in the African American community can occur.
Currently playing on the Main stage through March 4th is “The Legend of Buster Neal.” A play about four generations of Black men coming together to save the fifth generation, a boy lured by drugs, guns and violence. These are just a few comments made by patrons:
“Loved it. Plan to bring 13 year old grandson and his father.”
“The play was very timely. I will be back with friend’s children.”
“(It’s) a wonderful presentation and a very good message for teenagers.”
“Great show! I wish I had brought my son.”
Bring a young man or a group of young men to see this show and participate in post-show discussions around the issues in the play. Group rates are available. A link to a video clip about the play follows: http://youtu.be/09o9QLh7A10
General admission is $30 with special student, senior and group rates. Thursdays at 8 pm are $20 throughout the year. Call 773.752.3955 or visit www.etacreativearts.org for more information.
“Strong men raise strong sons, businesses sustain healthy communities and cultural traditions are the bedrock,” -- Kemati Porter, director, “The Legend of Buster Neal”
